A recent article by the Guardian reported that the majority of new mums spend north of £1,000 in the first year of a baby’s life on “essentials”, while some parents, according to the Money Advice Service, spend as much as £7,200 in the first year. Thrifty blogger Gayle of Make Thrift Love Life shops the Kiddicare Sale and shows how to cut the costs. Baby on a budget this way!
Thankfully, there are loads of thrifty ways you can cut costs and spend considerably less. With baby number two due in four weeks’ time (and counting!) I will certainly be spending wisely. I will embrace second-hand, cheerfully accept hand-me-downs and shop around for bargains. And with the Kiddicare Sale now live and kicking, I’ve picked out some great value buys that have caught my eye.
Babystyle Oyster Package – Spice. RRP £466.50, Sale price £351.50 plus free carrycot worth £115
This small but extremely sturdy pram and carrycot ticks all the boxes for me. It’s suitable for newborns up to toddlers, and the seat can face either way. It has a roomy basket underneath to stow away all your shopping bags, and has a raincover included. I love the pop of colour – it’ll really stand out from the other prams on the high street.
Tommee Tippee Sangenic Nappy Disposal System RRP £35.99, Sale price £26.63
I used to think of these nappy disposal systems as “luxuries” but didn’t realise how useful they were until I had a newborn of my own. After around a week of taking around 12 nappies out to the bin individually each day, I gave in and bought this one. It’s brilliant for convenience, the cassettes last much longer than expected, and it truly does lock away any unwanted smells.
Kiddicare Flexible Baskets Sale price £3.99
I love being organised but having a baby can challenge even the tidiest of people. These flexible tubs are brilliant for throwing everything in, and creating the illusion of calm! They would come in really handy for storing spare nappies, wipes, creams, toys… you name it.
Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Starter Kit, RRP £99.99 Sale price £64.99
However you choose to feed, this is a really great buy! It includes everything you need for breast, bottle or combination feeding, including my favourite item, the travel steriliser small enough to fit in a changing bag. The kit also includes bottles, brush, bottle warmer, electric steriliser, teats, bottle bags and formula dispenser.
Kiddicare Crunch Highchair – Pears Was £49.99, Sale price £39.99
Wipe-clean, adjustable height, super-cute design – what more could you wish for in a highchair? It can be folded neatly out of the way when not in use, and the seat even reclines into three different positions. The unisex colours and design of this chair appeal to me as well – so if more babies come along in the future you’re on the front foot!
Kiddicare Traffic SP Group 1/2/3 Car Seat Was £49.99, Sale price £24.99
Knowing which front-facing car seat to buy can be tricky, but a purse-friendly option is a Group 1/2/3 seat like this one, suitable from around 9 months to 11 years old. It’s comfy and padded, easy to move between vehicles and it’s packed with safety features for peace of mind.
Kiddicare Woodland Activity Blocks Was £12.99, Sale Price £3.89
I’m always on the lookout for gorgeous woodland-themed toys, and Kiddicare’s range is so cute. These blocks are a fabulous price with 70% off. Super-soft and suitable for your baby from birth, your little one can practice stacking (or throwing!) while enjoying the whimsical characters.
Kiddicare Woodland Playmat Was £19.99, Sale price £9.99
This woodland playmat is another item from Kiddicare’s woodland range that I can’t resist. It’s very soft, and has lovely colours and textures for your baby to enjoy, while he or she is discovering their new ability to roll around and sit up! This mat would also make a perfect gift for a newborn baby.
Kiddicare Car Door Bouncer Was £59.99, Sale price £23.99
This is the fanciest door bouncer I’ve ever seen, and it makes me smile! Suitable from as soon as your baby can hold its head up, it will keep your little one (and indeed you!) entertained for ages. It’s padded and comfortable, and it features lights, sounds and music to stimulate all the senses. Available in pink and blue… grab it now while it’s in the sale!
